Sumi Wu was born in California and grew up in Eastern Washington and Northern New Mexico. A graduate of Stanford University in Japanese Studies, Sumi has taught and studied in Alaska, Japan, Colorado and Washington.

Sumi constantly experiments with new work, new forms and new media. Although she started as a functional potter, and still enjoys making functional work that anyone can use and enjoy, in recent years she's developed a successful sculptural career, working in media such as clay, metal and glass.

"I find the exploration of different media and styles to be exhilarating. To me the appeal of art is the moment of discovery in the studio when I get to ask 'What can I do now?' Mastering many styles and forms ultimately gives the artist far more creative freedom in the ability to bring an artistic vision to life."

Much of Sumi's work reflects the groundwork of ancient forms, but with modern touches and the occasional hint of whimsy. Every year brings new experiments and new forms, but each is grounded in the desire to create something personal, beautiful and meaningful.

Sumi lives and works in Vancouver, Washington. She is a founding member of Women Who Weld. Visit the Women Who Weld website.
